I am not Balinese, I am originally from Java island. But I am sure that there are two things that are not like exactly as Elisabeth Gilbert told in her book "Eat, Pray, Love". I believe that some of my Balinese male friends prefer the doctor tell the truth about his fertility problem than seeing a shaman to ask for help. Moreover if they know the shaman tells their wifes to have a baby with other men. I believe Wayan is just a "deviation" of healing practice. There are indeed many alternative healing spread across Bali, especially in Ubud, but you have to be careful and not trust someone easily just because someone admits that he/she has "special power".
This is no.1 rule about "trust", you cannot trust 100% someone that you just met, especially in a new place. I must admit that Balinese people are kind and very friendly, but still there are two types of person in the world: "good guy" and "bad guy". You cannot predict someone is really good or bad at a glance. Even sometimes your friends that you consider as close friends; they take advantage from you and they're glad to see you fall. I think it is not wise to give cash money to someone you just know, in a quite big amount straight away. It's better to donate in small amount first and ask him/her to do something for you. Even you do not really expect his/her work.
I do hope, after reading the book, you can make your own evaluation and not judge people in Ubud and Bali straight away as written in "Eat Pray Love"
